British Airship R-100

Beitragvon TALLTREES » 9. Dez 2012, 19:00

Hello. I would like to show some original pictures taken at Cardington, Bedfordshire, England of the British Airship the "R-100" on the 26 April 1930 this was the same day as LZ 127 Graf Zeppelin arrived (1930 England Flight). On one of the pictures it shows damage to the R-100 starboard elevator flap, this was caused by a side gust of wind hitting the R-100 as she was been taken out of the shed, the landing party could not keep control in the high winds and the starboard elevator was bumped against the shed door causing damage, if the landing crew had gone another 5 feet and she would have been clear of the shed door. The R-100 was not put back in the shed as it was thought that repairs could be carried out at the Tower, but on closer inspection the damage was more serious and after three days and nights at the Tower the R-100 was returned back to the shed to be repaired. On his visit the Captain of the LZ 127 Dr Hugo Eckener had arranged to make a short trip on the R-100, but becauce of the damage to the elevator this did not happen.

Hello. Id like to show this souvenir Postcard which was sold at the Aerodrome - St Hubert, Montreal, Canada during the R-100's visit (29.7.30 - 16.8.30), cancelled AUG.13.1930, the St Hubert's Airport stamp has the signature of the Postmaster "George Faille". Also i enclose a picture of a large scale model of the "R-100" which i took on my visit to the Air Museum at Elvington, York, England, where there is a small exhibition there. The Air Museum at Elvington is approximately 15 Miles from "Howden" where the R-100 was built at by the Airship Guarantee Co.

Dear TALLTREES,

your postcard was bought really as souvenir in August 1930 in Saint-Hubert Airport in Montreal/Canada , whither the airship R-100 arrived from Cardington.
The ship slipped the moorings from the Cardington mast at 02.48am on the morning of 29th July 1930. The ship flew over the Atlantic and headed down the Newfoundland coast to Montreal, arrived on 1st August at 05.37am, after a voyage of some 78 hours and 49 minutes; a journey of 3,364 miles.

But it also has another feature... 8-)
It was cancelled also on August 13th,1930 , when R100 started for home and arrived to Cardington on 16 August, 1930, after 2995 miles (3690 kilometres) and 57 hours 56 minutes.

Best regards,
pasol.

During its stay in the airport many visitors visited R-100 and some of them sent letters and postcards, please see such letter with flight cachet from August 3rd, 1930 from my collection.

R-100 also made a 24-hour passenger circular "local" flight to Ottawa, Toronto, and Niagara Falls on August 10-11, 1930.

Best regards,
pasol.

There is the visitor's ticket of R-100.

There are the autographs of passengers of airship R-100 and part of article from "Flight", August 22,1930.

There is an interesting blog dedicated to R-100:

Hello pasol & members. I would also like to add some more pieces ;). The first a pair of souvenir Postcards signed by the Postmaster at St Hubert Airport George Faille, all these souvenir Postcards were uniformly canceled, and the majority but not all were stamped by Postmaster "LEON E, GLOBENSKY". The next piece is a transported cover addressed to again Postmaster Mr Globensky, cancelled August 7th 1930, with the "Ste-Agathe-Des-Monts" arrival stamp, and also the St Huberts Airport official stamp. ;)
